Beyond the Park Gates: Eloping Under Moab’s “Hidden” Arches

When you picture a Moab elopement, a towering red rock arch is likely the first thing that comes to mind. You want that “I Do” moment framed by ancient stone, but the reality of a National Park the crowds, the strict permits, and the limited trail options might start to feel like a compromise rather than a celebration.

Here’s the good news: Their are arches in Moab aren’t actually in the National Park.

By stepping outside the park boundaries onto public land, you trade the tourists and red tape for more freedom. As your Moab expert, I’ve scouted the secret spots where you can have that iconic desert experience on your own terms. Here are two of my favorite “off the beaten path” arches:

Option 1: The “Accessible Adventure” (Drive-Up)

Located about 40 minutes from the Arches National Park gate, this arch offers stunning views with zero hiking required. It’s the perfect choice if you want to save your energy for the celebration or if you’re bringing along a few loved ones who aren’t up for a trek.

  • The Vibe: This is a favorite haunt for local rock climbers. Seeing athletes scaling the nearby walls only adds to the “cool,” rugged energy of your day. It’s an epic, open space that feels like a true desert sanctuary.
  • Best For: Couples who want an easy-access ceremony followed by a private 4×4 adventure deeper into the backcountry.

Option 2: The “Epic Journey” (3-Mile Hike)

If you’re craving a bit of dirt on your boots, this location is unbeatable. Sitting about 50 minutes from the park entrance, this trail leads to an absolutely massive arch that puts many of the park’s landmarks to shame.

  • The Experience: The hike is a classic desert journey. You’ll navigate stone stairs at the start and finish, with a wide, flat middle section that lets you soak in the scenery. There’s even a fun ladder and safety cable section near the top for that true “adventure” feel.
  • The Reward: Once you reach the arch, the scale is breathtaking. You’re surrounded by towering boulders and tiny desert cacti, with a vintage railway winding through the canyon floor below.
  • Pro-Tip: Because this trail is wide open to the sun, it’s best reserved for sunrise or sunset. Not only is the lighting more romantic, but you’ll avoid the midday desert heat.

Why Choose Public Land Over the Park?

Choosing an arch outside the National Park isn’t just about avoiding crowds it’s about intentionality. On BLM land, we have more flexibility with where we go, how we move, and how we celebrate. You aren’t just a number in a park queue; you’re an adventurer embarking on a day that is entirely yours.

Ready to find your perfect arch? Whether you want to drive right up to the view or hike into the heart of the canyon, I’m here to guide you to the spots that most tourists don’t even know exist.

XOXO, Alyssa
