Arches in Moab that aren’t in the national park.

Hidden Arches in Moab

When you picture a Moab elopement, a towering red rock arch is likely the first thing that comes to mind. You want that “I Do” moment framed by ancient stone. Without the reality of the National Park crowds, the strict permits, and the limited trail options might start to feel like a compromise rather than a celebration.

By stepping outside the park boundaries and onto public land, you’ll be trading the swarms of tourists and strict national park rules for more freedom as well as flexibility. As your Moab expert, I’ve scouted for the secret spots where you’ll have that iconic desert experience on your own terms. Here are two of my favorite arches:

Option 1: The “Accessible Adventure” (Drive Up)

Located about 40 minutes from the Arches National Park gate. This hole in the wall arch offers stunning panoramic views with minimal hiking required. (The climb up into the arch is pretty steep so good shoes and a stomach for heights is a must.) With dirt parking available just 5 minutes from the arch itself, this arch is a perfect option for the couples wanting to include a few family members who aren’t up for a hike/ couples wanting include multiple stops to their celebration.

The arch is a popular spot for local rock climbers. In my opinion even though you may have an audience of climbers, seeing athletes scaling the nearby walls as you say your vows only adds to the coolness factor of your day. It’s an epic, open space that feels like a true desert sanctuary.

  • Best For: Couples who want an easy-access ceremony followed by a private 4×4 adventure deeper into the backcountry.

Option 2: The “Epic Journey” (3-Mile Hike)

If you’re craving a bit of dirt on your boots, this location is unbeatable. Sitting about 50 minutes from the park entrance, this trail leads to an absolutely massive arch that puts many of the park’s landmarks to shame. This arch is best visited at sunrise to beat the desert heat, but if you prefer an evening hike, I recommend this arch during the off season closer to November as this is a popular place for some hikers.

The hike is a classic desert journey. Starting off you’ll navigate stone stairs at the start gaining steady elevation to get you started. From there the ground flattens into a dirt path with an amazing view of the desert. Eventually you will continue to climb the rock itself by way of a fun ladder and safety cable section near the top for that true adventure feel.

Once you reach the arch, the scale is breathtaking. You’re surrounded by towering boulders and tiny desert cacti, with a vintage railway winding through the canyon floor below.

Why Choose Public Land Over the Park?

Choosing an arch outside the National Park isn’t just about avoiding crowds it’s about intentionality. On BLM land, we have more flexibility with where we go, how we move, and how we celebrate. You aren’t just a number in a park queue; you’re an adventurer embarking on a day that is entirely yours.

Ready to find your perfect arch? Whether you want to drive right up to the view or hike into the heart of the canyon, I’m here to guide you to the spots that most tourists don’t even know exist.

XOXO, Alyssa
