One of my favorites being Caledonia.
A town set in time.
Caledonia is so special because it really falls into that old town charm when things felt slower and more intentional. As a National Historic District, the town features 33 preserved buildings The crowned jewel of the town is “The old Village Mercantile.” Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Old Village Mercantile is an authentic1909 mercantile that takes you back to a simpler time. Offering over 600 varieties of Old Fashioned Candy, fudge, Artisan hand scooped Ice Cream and so much more to see! It easy to lose track of time in this cute little spot. The mercantile’s Ice cream is to die for! Caledonia is also chockful of antique stores begging to be explored in small hidden pockets of the town. This is the perfect town to add to your itineracy of the day if your the kind of couple who thrives on taking time to stroll through old shoppes and feel like you’ve taken back in time.
there’s a few places in town to eat and they all are very different from each other. My favorites being:
1.old village hot dog shoppe – A hole in the wall type establishment serving award winning hotdogs. Limited indoor and patio seating.
2 Old Tyme Diner – Cute diner with an old timey feel. Serving up American classics like burgers, wings, and toasted ravioli.
Caledonia in located reasonably close to several local attractions, Elephant rock, Johnson shut ins, and Taum Sauk State Park making it a great pit stop to and from the fun of the day. Only about half of the stores are open M-F I would still stick to a weekday elopement to cut down on crowds as Caledonia will get a little busy on weekends.
